Two particular natural herbs can be helpful in patients with diabetes. Researchers found that the two substances called luteolin and apigenin can have positive effects on the sugar metabolism and are thus ideally suited for the therapy of diabetes. At the same time, they prevent fat deposits and thus help to lose weight.
Globally, approximately 285 million people suffer from the metabolic disease Diabetes mellitus. By the year 2025, the United Nations estimates that the number of people affected will increase by 50 percent worldwide.
Basic therapy: diet and exercise
Although type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes require different treatment regimens, basic therapy is the same. A balanced diet and physical exercise are an absolute must for both types.
Especially in everyday life, however, those affected are faced with the challenge of selecting the right foods. Contrary to the erroneous belief that a lean diet and to have to forgo certain foods, one today knows that it is not a question of abandonment but a balanced and healthy diet.
It is ideal if one selects such foods, which have a particularly positive effect on the sugar metabolism. These are, on the one hand, foods with a low glycemic index, that is to say those foods which do not excessively increase the blood glucose level, such as, for example, sweetened products or white flour products.
But there are also foods which, because of their special ingredients, counteract diabetes.

Scientists have long been struggling to gain more recognition of alternative diabetic therapies, and are calling for a thorough investigation into the efficacy of certain substances in vegetables, fruits and medicinal herbs.
For in some foodstuffs, substances that can be crucial for diabetics are also to prevent the typical diabetes-related diseases.
Researchers in a study recently published in the online journal PLOS ONE show that the secondary plant compounds luteolin and apigenin, which belong to the group of flavones, positively influence the sugar metabolism.
Our results suggest that both substances are antidiabetic and could explain why vegetables and plant foods sometimes play an important role in alternative diabetic therapies ”

Luteolin and apigenin are antioxidative and anti-inflammatory
It has also been shown on cell and animal models that both luteolin and apigenin are antioxidative and anti-inflammatory, which could be an explanation for the good efficacy of these plants due to the fact that diabetes is one of the chronic inflammatory diseases.
Luteolin and apigenin lower blood glucose levels
The study also shows that both flavones activate the transcription factor FOX O1 (forkhead-box gene 01) in human cells. FOX O1 is an albumin molecule and is responsible for mediating the insulin signal in the cells.
This means that the two substances improve the insulin effect and thus reduce the blood glucose level to a healthy level.
Natural herbs prevent the formation of new fat
In addition, luteolin and apigenin inhibit those enzymes which are responsible for the formation and storage of fats in the body.
Also, enzymes are blocked which initiate the production of sugars from glycogen in the liver, which can also lead to increased blood glucose values.
This observation is especially relevant in the case of diabetes, as excess liver sugar production contributes to increased blood glucose levels, and inhibition of the formation of grease would also help to reduce the risk of liver fatigue,

For the future, new nutritional strategies are emerging. If you look at a diet rich in flavon in the diet, the sugar metabolism improves and the quality of life for diabetics increases significantly.
