Does green leaf vegetables protect against diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is now a national disease. In 2010, around 285 million people were affected worldwide – and the trend is rising.
In addition to genetic factors, lack of exercise and overweight are the main causes of the development of diabetes, as the adipose tissue, especially the abdomen, emits messengers that promote insulin resistance.
A conscious diet can thus be regarded as the best strategy to prevent diabetes.
In this sense, British researchers examined the relationship between diabetes and the consumption of green leafy vegetables, and found some amazing results.
Green leaf vegetables prevent diabetes
Scientists around Patrice Carter of the University of Leicester’s Diabetes Research Center have published an interesting study in the British Medical Journal.
It was investigated whether fruits and vegetables could reduce the risk of diabetes.
The research team looked at a total of six studies, involving more than 200,000 people between 30 and 74 years in the USA, China and Finland.
In these studies, a group of adults were observed over a period of between 4.5 and 23 years. The focus was on how many servings of fruit and vegetables each participant consumed daily.
Subsequently, the subjects with whom a type 2 diabetes was diagnosed were examined.
In the case of fruit and vegetable diet in general, however, the risk of disease was only slightly reduced.
The green leaf vegetables danced, however – but in the positive sense: the scientists found out that one and a half portions (100 g) per day are sufficient to reduce the risk of diabetes by 14 percent.
It is important to note that green leafy vegetables such as spinach, chard, nettle leaves or dandelion have a high concentration of beta-carotene, vitamin C and polyphenols. These are substances which are characterized by their antioxidant properties.
Furthermore, green leaf vegetables are particularly rich in magnesium. According to recent scientific findings, people with a low magnesium diet are much more likely to suffer from diabetes, as the pancreas can only work to a limited extent with magnesium deficiency, and the insulin resistance increases when the magnesium is too low.
