One in 5 Americans are diagnosed with some sort of mental illness.
If you are depressed you basically lack any sort of motivation. You tend to distance yourself from others. Not to talk about socializing. Sport has always been an important key role when fighting depression. Not necessarily competitive sport, but walking, swimming, jogging or anything that gets you moving.
Pokemon Go helps people to get out and fight their Depression
Signs of depression
- Loss of interest in activities
- Loss of energy and/or motivation
- changes of sleep pattern
- Feeling hopeless
- weight gain
- weight loss
- changes in appettite
- Feeling helpless
Exercise and Depression
Part of the treatment of Depression is to inform the patient about the importance of exercise. Yet, that is all that is really done in that area. The patient has to battle against his demotivation and loss of interest in daily activities. Exercise is so important for individuals, especially those that fight anxiety and depression.
During Exercise certain hormones are released.
- Human Growth Hormone
- Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor
The more you exercise, the happier you are. This also counts for those suffering from severe depression. So it really starts there. Of course, you should never replace any psychiatric or medical treatment, but it can work very well as an addition.
Endorphins have a similar effect on the body as morphine. People report an euphoric state after a workout. This euphoric is caused by the release of the endorphin that rush through our bodies.
Pokemon Go said to be a helpful addition to Anxiety treatments
The main thing about this game is that you have to go to different places in order to find Pokemons. This is a great motivation to get all of us up from the couch. Since this game is highly addicitve, the players usually do not thing twice before getting out.
For those that suffer from social anxiety this game can be also a motivation to socialize. Talking to other Pokemon Trainers (that is how you call the other players) can benefit your game.
The fact that someone who suffers from Depression can motivate himself to get out of his or her bed, stands for a Milestone.
Pokemon Go seems to be a game that cultivates healthy behaviors, rather than being designed to fight depression. As opposed to the common games, that you can play in the safety of your living room, Pokemon Go makes you want to get them all. Yet it wasn’t designed to help treat anxiety or depression.
In addition, the fact that this game gets you outside, into the nature, can do anybodies health good. It can help with weight loss or help to stay in shape. Exposure to sunlight refills our Vitamin D levels. Low levels of Vitamin D are often associated with Depression and High Blood pressure.
TBH and on a serious note, Pokemon GO is one of the best treatments against depression and other mental problems! My opinion honestly

Pokemon Go connects strangers
With now more than 15 million users worldwide, Pokemon Go created a new network. Patients with Depression usually turn to video games. Yet, the kind of games that are out there are usually played in the comfort of their own , which makes it even harder to treat those mental illnesses.
Also, Research indicates that the more educated and intelligent the person with mental illness is, the less likely he or she will seek any sort of treatment.
That is why general awareness is so important. Depression can effect each one of us. We live in a world were people look down on those fighting such problems.
It is important to note that Pokemon Go is not a substitute for a medical treatment of depression or any form of anxiety.
Kinda weird to say this but #PokemonGO actually helped me a little w/ my depression. I made new friends in the city today ☺️

The animated creatures, that capture the world are reportedly beneficial in fighting depression. Especially Twitter is full of people claiming that they feel much better in their lives, thanks to this new game. Our mood is impacted by a combintation of serotonin, dopamine and adrenaline. All those hormones are released whilst haunting for your Pokemons.
I believe the major reason for the high impact on us, is mainly the activation of our brain reward system. The fact that you sometimes have to walk miles to get one Pokemon, rewards you with pleasurable feelings. It’s addictive.
When to go offline
As with all games, if it impacts your daily activities in a negative way and you don’ t get things done, then it is time to unplug. Make sure you do not let Pokemon Go overtake your life. Know when to turn off.
Especially when you are driving! As there have been reports about Pokemon Go Trainers actually causing accidents. That is really unnecessary.
So with that in mind, have fun looking for your Pokemons.
