It is important to keep your Kidneys healthy. Our Kidneys are important organs, filtering waste products out of our body. If not for their work, our blood would contain many toxins that make us sick and even lead to death.
Kidneys are a very sensitive organ. Therefore it requires a certain amount of care to make sure you keep your kidneys healthy.
Tips to keep your Kidneys healthy
- Healthy Food: Our Kidneys filter about 200 liters of blood every single day. Eating a balanced diet makes sure we provide our body with all the vitamins and minerals he needs.By eating a healthy and moderate diet you can prevent conditions such as weight problems, high blood pressure or diabetes which in return can harm your kidneys.
- Quit smoking: Smoking can damage small blood vessel which in return can disrupt the flow of blood inside the kidneys. Smoking is also a known contributor for high blood pressure or kidney cancer.
- Hydration: Staying hydrated will help your kidneys function properly. Your urine should be light yellow. If it is darker than that you are most likely dehydrated. It is important to mention that over hydration can also be harmful. Drinking about 6 – 8 glasses of water a day is a good orientation.
- Blood pressure: Watch your Blood Pressure. Hypertension is one of the leading causes of kidney disease. A healthy balanced Blood pressure is important in keeping your kidneys healthy.
- Diabetes: High sugar levels are a major factor in Kidney Disease, such as Kidney Failure. If you are diabetic monitor your blood sugar regularly.
- Family history: If you are aware of a family member diagnosed with High Blood Pressure or Diabetes, make sure you check if you have similar conditions. It is also recommended to regularly screen your kidneys.
- Cholesterol: Keep you cholesterol levels in the target range

- Medication: Avoid unnecessary medication. Also only take prescribed medication, not any off-the –counter option. You are doing yourself no favor.
- Weight: If you are overweight you are not putting a strain on your bones and heart, but also on your kidneys.
- Be physically active: Exercise and an overall active lifestyle have shown to prevent most causes of kidney Disease. Exercise helps you to regulate Blood pressure and keeps your weight in check. But also mentally you can benefit a lot from it, as it is a natural mood booster.
